My site loves me. My site loves me not. Are you getting the love back from your site?
Sites like any living thing need care. Designing your site and then leaving it out in the open to collect dust will do nothing for your product or brand. It simply says you are no longer interested in your site and that you are not interested in that segment of your customers who use the Web.
So when should you redesign your site? Are there any standards? The short answer is “No.” There are no standards but below is a list of three factors that will help you decide if it is time to redesign your web site.
Tip Number 1- Competition
Are you facing new found competition? If so, then now is the time to redesign your site. Your competitors will most likely be taking a new approach to advertising their service or product online and use new trends in social marketing. It’s time to look at how you stack up against your competition on the Web.
Tip Number 2- Branding
Has your company, brand, or product changed? If so, in the least you need to update a couple of pages. At most, you may need to redesign the site to show the new brand messaging and logo.
Tip Number 3- Outdated Look and Feel
Does your site look like 1996? Unless your brand is a total retro product then you should consider a redesign. Your presentation is all that you have online and users are making quick decisions about your company based upon your web site design.
Next Steps
Once you’ve identified that it is time to redesign write down the main reason. Is it a rebranding initiative? Maybe a design refresh. Then find a good user experience design firm to work with. Give them your main reason for the redesign and then begin the process of co-authoring the new chapter in the life of your web site.
