Recently I was asked, “Do I need a web site if I have a Facebook page or a Twitter account?”. The short answer is YES. You need a web site and a tactical use of Social Media on your side these days.
A web site is a home base. A corporate headquarters if you will. Twitter and Facebook are more like satellite offices. Each of those locations support the headquarters while meeting the local or regional needs of their customers.
Social Media has its place. You have to know when, how, and what to do with it. The big two; Facebook and Twitter offer you the ability to speak to niche audiences that have a connection with your brand. There is an immediacy and transparency of communication that is expected to take place in those forums that would most likely not take place on a corporate web site.
So your web site and Social Media outlets have a place. But build your headquarters first. Then move forward with your satellite offices.

Yes, if you have Facebook you DO need a web site, because anything you’re not paying the hosting for can get yanked out from under you, your account suspended or cancelled, for any whimsical reason they refuse to tell you. If you want to own your online presence, own your own web site and/or blog. Just today I saw a well known author have limitations placed on his Facebook account. We don’t know what was said to him, he’s very cryptic, implying we were burning up the servers, but he only has about 1800 fans through Facebook, as opposed to Sarah Palin’s 600,000. But he is even more politically incorrect than Ms. Palin, posing a very believable conspiracy theory concerning the gov’t, and it really looks like somebody leaned on somebody to muzzle this guy. So Facebook imposed rules on him they don’t impose on other people. But when you own your own web site, you make the rules.
