Last week I wrote how social media can save TV. After looking for a good topic to write about this week I struck gold. The SEC revised its policy on new media to include a ban on social media – say what???
What does the SEC gain by this ban? Their stance is maintaining their contractual obligation with CBS and feel that the distribution of stats, video and pictures will take viewers away from their TV audience.
Later in the week the Big Ten Conference came out on the flip side and is actually encouraging the use of web sites like Twitter and Facebook. They believe that this only strengthens the fan relationship with their favorite team, coach or player.
I have to side with the Big Ten on this argument. First how are you going to stop the use of iPhones at a game? Second instead of running from emerging technologies take a moment learn about it and embrace it if it works for you. Looking at the latest TV ratings and web site traffic numbers I think TV could use an injection of something new.
Is social media the answer? Only time will tell. What we do know is that the SEC has changed the language of its new policy to include the following – “Personal messages and updates of scores or other brief descriptions of the competition throughout the Event are acceptable.
Score one for the fans!
