modal-interimIn the first quarter of this year we embarked upon a rebrand of Modal, Inc. A new logo, color palette, service offering, and web site. As we worked diligently to create our new vision we had an opportunity to attend the Creative UnConference in New York. Now why does that matter?

We had our old site up. It didn’t speak in our new brand language. It didn’t illustrate our new approach to user experience. We had to come up with something new and quickly!

So we decided to create a one page interim site that would announce our upcoming brand and our new language. We didn’t have a lot of time so we took a new approach. Instead of wireframing in our typical fashion using Omnigraffle we went to pen and paper.

Following that thought process resulted in this interim page.

Next time you find yourself in a position to try something new- do it! Break out of your normal process and step away from the computer. You may just end up with something you love.

Daimon, Great post. We are always using hand drawn IA and site sketches internally and with clients. There is no faster way than getting on a white board or big pad and banging it out! We tend to fall back on our tools and when we step out side of them we can actually get more creative with our solutions. I have about 5 pads of graph paper for sketching IA, designs, Logos and anything else that is needed to get the idea across. Cheers! Dan

Dan- Hey good to hear from you! Glad to see you all are sketchin’ it up. It works well for us. I will say though that some clients expect a bit more polish than sketches. At the concept stage we use sketches internally. Omnigraffle or Visio for documentation and client presentation. Take care and hope all is well in Zemogaland!
