You remember the cool kids in high school? They were the ones with the “in” clothes, the cadre of friends, and the really nice car. Well many of them are on Twitter and you should learn how to be cool.
Twitter is not for everyone. It’s great for brands, niche professions, and those interested in hearing from interesting people from all over the world.
So if you want to be cool follow our quick recommendations below.
Don’t Sell
It is not a place to blatantly sell your wares or pimp your services. Remember used car sales tactics are not cool.
Don’t Toot Your Own Horn
Continually tweeting about how cool you are means you are not cool. Others make you legendary- not you. So don’t pummel your followers with “this is why we are so great” posts. Your followers will drop you quickly.
Butt Out
Don’t pop in on conversations unless you really have something meaningful to say. Butting in on tweets because you think it’s a chance to sell, gain notoriety, or steer the conversation is a bad thing.
How to Be Cool
Help Others
Help your fellow: knitters, mountain bikers, user experience professionals, or whatever your niche may be in order to gain fame for being a knowledgeable person who is willing to help. Helping is cool.
Give Shout Outs
Are one of your peers doing something innovative? Let others know. Send links of your friend’s latest web site redesign. Congratulate your marketing firm on its new office space. It’s cool to acknowledge other peoples’ successes.
Be Charismatic
Now this is subjective. Some of the people I follow use all the “cool kids language” others are a bit more conservative. Some are well known web designers and others are hot on the speaking circuit. This coolness comes out in their tweets. You feel like you know them because they convey their personality in their posts.
Don’t be afraid to add a bit of yourself in your tweets. Twitter is new for us all. Take a leap and get to know others in your field. There are many interesting people out there. Discover them and tell others. Being cool is fashionable online too!
Let your personality shine through in 140 characters or less. And don’t forget- be cool.
