My UXD peers enjoy engaging users, observing their behavior, and integrating that knowledge into a fabulous web site experience. But it seems like only a select number of clients understand how important the user experience is to the design. When you work with Modal you are agreeing to our process. We are User Experience specialists- not just designers.
Maybe clients focus on the design because that is what they can see. Although they can see site maps, interaction diagrams, and wireframes they can’t envision it in context to their overall site. At times we’ll encounter site map level churn during the design process because they didn’t quite comprehend that labels, order of buttons, and the information hierarchy were already defined. For us the user experience work is really important- design comps are the icing on the cake.
Without research our design would only be as good as it looked when it could be absolutely game changing. Focusing on the pretty will only last a short time. The real investment is in the process, research, and user experience.
UXD is for everyone. Investing in more than just the design will provide a boost in the brand and its awareness through use. Users will begin talking about how easy it was to use your site or site- not just how great it looked.
