By now you have heard the news that Google and Bing have inked deals to provide Tweets and Facebook status updates in searches. This is very interesting news but don’t forget – this ultimately gives more visibility to your tweets and Facebook status updates.
I previously blogged about Do’s and Don’ts of Social Media. These tips still hold true. I think they are worth reviewing. I say this because stories like someone tweeting about a job offer only to have it rescinded or tweeting about a moldy apartment and the landlord suing the tenant just keep coming.
Will this new deal leave Twitter and Facebook a ghost town due to users fearing for their privacy – No.
You do have choices if you don’t want your updates showing up in a Google or Bing search.
- Don’t tweet it and don’t update your Facebook status with news you don’t want the world to see – always the best rule of thumb to follow
- Set your Twitter settings to Protect my Tweets – doing this will not include your tweets in the public timeline
- Under your Facebook privacy settings, go to Search and in the Search Discovery drop down select My Networks and Friends of Friends or a more restrictive setting
The key here is to use common sense. Most of us know not to tweet personal information that can later come back to you or the company you work for. Remember if you Tweet it or Facebook it – one way or another it can be found.
