unconfLately I have noticed a trend. More and more Social Media events are popping up locally. This is a trend I can get used to.

Living in Virginia the idea of traveling to New York to attend an "it" event was always appealing. And confirmed when I attended the Creative UnConference in May. Now I have the luxury of attending more events because they are local or within a few hours drive.

If you are looking for a Social Media event in your area check out Google, Bing, Yahoo or whatever your search engine of choice and type in your state name and social media event. Or, and this is likely where you’ll find more niche events, use Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. I personally use them all to keep an eye out for upcoming events. Don’t forget to use Social Media to find Social Media!

Events can be formal, sponsored gatherings with workshops or general get-togethers called "meetups". They come in all shapes and sizes. For instance, I try to get out to The Richmond Social Media Club which has regular events. If Richmond, Virginia is a bit too far for you check out the Social Media Club web site for other event locations.

Event Tips

Here are some tips to make the most of the next Social Media event.

  • Come prepared – laptop, pen and pad, smartphone (set to vibrate please) and lastly your BUSINESS CARDS!
  • Meet as many people as you can – it is a Social Media event after all.
  • Bring your ideas and find the right platform to discuss them- unstructured events are great for this.
  • Consider helping out as most of these events are volunteer driven.

Hopefully this has given you an incentive to get out to the next Social Media event in your area. Remember get out and be social!
