panelIt was a dark and rainy night at Viget Labs when I meandered into the RefreshDC event. It was a who’s who of DC design in there. Brian Williams from Viget (not in photo), Jen Sterling from Hinge, Anthony Pappas from the Pappas Group, Jeff Walpole from Phase2 Technology, and Martin Ringlein from nclud were lending their advice about the business of design. It was arguably one of the best Refreshes I’ve attended. The panel folks were very gracious. Everything from contracts to real estate were discussed. But the resounding take away was “passion.” Passion for your business and the design community will help you be successful.

Refresh will not have an event next month but be sure to come out and support the community. Great job panelists and thanks for sharing!

I agree; it was an inspiring evening. You know one of the big take-away’s of the evening for me? One panelist said don’t let one client take up more than 20% of your business; another panelist said 5%. They also mentioned that while specialization was important, it was also critical for business success to diversify among several industries. Words of wisdom! Their comments made me reflect that the companies that I have seen fail didn’t fail because of poor work but because they were over-reliant on a few big clients, or a single industry.

You’re right. Also, I have seen businesses fail or come close to it because of a bad real estate decision. They mentioned that last night also. I think that’s why it’s important to hire people that are smarter than you. Ones that have done it before.
