What happens when a bunch of politicos get together with a group of Social Media geeks? @Ryanobles gets heckled and you find that SM really has a place in politics. Of course, add an open bar and a cramped space at the Science Museum of Richmond and you’ve got a cocktail of seriously, social interaction going on.
So in between cooling off in the hallway and refreshing my drink, I found it interesting how the McDonnell campaign used Twitter to not only push their campaign message but also how they used the platform. Tweets that were found important were saved as news clippings for instance. Using social media isn’t new as the Obama Presidential campaign demonstrated. However, it’s refreshing to hear how it was implemented in local politics.
The panelist all agreed that Social Media is a necessary tool for communications during and after the campaign. Twitter, Facebook and blogs all need to be blended with traditional media to formulate a complete media plan. Now that McDonnell has been elected J. Tucker Martin, Director of Communications, stated that they would continue some sort of social media outreach.
All in all it was a great event. Until then back to Facebook and Twitter!
