candlelightTwo very moving occurrences have prompted me to write today. The ongoing tragedy in Haiti and the celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. These two events highlight the influence of technology on the human experience.

The Web didn’t cause the earth to shake- nor did it assassinate a great man. But the Web has found a way to connect people to one another in ways that are becoming more and more evident. I see the maturation of an industry. It’s all coming into focus now.

In the late 60s television illuminated the frustration of a nation. A nation that needed change in order to move forward. It was that medium that helped make it possible for President Obama to use the Web for social change. It was Twitter and Facebook that prompted people to act on an experience that became a shared belief that change was possible.

And this week we all have been witness to the stirring, often brutal conditions in Haiti via Twitter, Facebook, and other social platforms. Millions of dollars of donations have poured in via texting and mobile devices. Technology is now being used in a way that has never been seen before. These events are marking the growth of social technologies by allowing the human condition to be expressed through the Web and its interconnections.

To those who think the Web is just a place for a corporate brochure or a display for their latest product they are living in the wrong decade. This new decade will mark the maturing of an industry. One that finds that the human experience of creating connections, identifying one self, and sharing thoughts with those whom one may have never seen is a necessity for extending a brand, launching a product, and building awareness. We are now in the Age of the Human Experience.
