If you’re an avid Twitter user you likely missed Twitter’s new homepage. Twitter is one of those rare web sites where the site is really there because it has to be but everyone accesses the data from another client like: CoTweet, HootSuite, Tweetie on the iPhone, etc. So that begs the question: why update the homepage when most users won’t even notice?
Attract New Users
Twitter has been around for years. It’s just gained popularity over the past year or so which is good reason for them to ride the wave. With popularity comes increased awareness from naysayers and other types of potential new users.
What’s New?
Twitter was a bit of a black box in which only the cool kids played. You had to sign up for the service to see actual tweets or feeds. But this new homepage design reveals the popular tweets in a feed streaming right in from the middle of the page. And viewers get to see the most talked about subjects via “trending topics” which tie into the popular tweets. So the platform becomes a bit more transparent to those interested in the service. And they don’t even need to sign up for an account.
A Call to Action
As soon as Twitter gained interest more and more companies began developing their own brand of interface for displaying and interacting with Twitter. As an open platform it makes it quite easy to use the data and bend it to your will but why doesn’t Twitter make a better interface? After all, they are the owner of the platform and the data- and theoretically the most knowledgeable of the medium.
So I call out to Twitter and ask: can you make your site the best way to enjoy a robust, multi-user account, analytics galore, and multi-pane view application? Although I love using CoTweet I can’t help but to wonder what you, Twitter, could create given the time to do so?
So while you are using your other means to access Twitter, stop by twitter.com to see the new homepage. You’ll enjoy it for a hot second and return back to your client app. But I’m sure the new design wasn’t for you in the first place
