ciglaunchI’ve been to a lot of launches and presentations over the years however none were as impressive as the book launch party for Jen Abernathy’s “Complete Idiot’s Guide to Social Media Marketing.”

Held this past Monday the 5th in a gorgeous event room at Gannett’s offices in McLean, the room was a buzz with the Who’s Who of Social Media, Advertising, and Viral video. Although the environment itself was great the best part was the presentation- rich with social interaction, online video book reviews (like a Skype call but not Skype), the Dad from davidafterdentist.com fame made a guest appearance, and the moderator give us a break to Tweet and chat during the event. You know Google calls practicing what you preach “dog fooding” and I call it “walking the walk”; whatever the term Jen and Sam Horn (moderator) did a fabulous job!

We’ll be reviewing Jen’s book in the coming week but in the meantime you can take a look at it via Amazon. Tell us what you think and we’ll add it to our review.

Thanks for the shout out for Jennifer’s book launch at USA Today headquarters. You’re right, as an author myself and 17-time Emcee of the world-renowned Maui-Hawaii Writers Conference, I’ve been to hundreds of book launches. And Jennifer’s was the most impressive for many reasons. As you mentioned, she “practiced what she teaches.” Her book is about the power of social media marketing and she modeled by showcasing clients and colleagues who have scaled their message, mission, cause and company via Twitter, FaceBook, YouTube and Linked in. As Emcee, I asked everyone to take 5 minutes to do the “Triple T” – Tweet, Text, Take a Photo. With 200 people in the room reaching out to their network, we just tripled the number of people who knew about the event in 5 minutes. In one week, after attendees (like you) are gracious enough to blog about the event or write a column int their newsletter or add a photo to their website with a caption; 20,000 people or more will now know about the event. THAT’s the power of social media marketing – and of creating an event where everyone had a good time, met interesting people and learned something useful. Sam Horn, author of POP! (”A lively guide to getting heard, getting results.” – Ken Blanchard)

I think her presentation made you want to buy the book and get deep into working out your SM plan. It wasn’t all “salesy” buy my book either. I would say that’s how you convert. Hats off to you as well for the great moderation. I know it wasn’t easy to get us all under control
