Consumer Reports released a report earlier this week stating 52% of Social Media users share too much personal information. The stats don’t really surprise me- after all it is Social Media. But are there too many loose lips or shall I say, loose finger tips out there typing out information that should be kept private?
Who’s To Blame?
Can we blame Facebook and Twitter for users often posting information that crosses the line into TMI? I think we all enjoy pictures of the weekend BBQ or the company Christmas party. And although we secretly may want to post the pics of Joe and Sally in the broom closet it likely is not the best move to make. Remember it may be cool for @kimkardashian to post literally whatever but we normal folk don’t get a pass like that.
But are the platforms to blame for allowing missteps in judgement? I don’t think so.
Common Sense 101
Don’t post anything you don’t feel comfortable seeing on a jumbo-tron in Times Square. And definitely be careful about talking about family members because they are probably on FB by now. There is a growing number of Baby Boomers jumping on these platforms and a high percentage of them are following their children.
At the end of the day all of the personal information we post is what makes Facebook and Twitter so enticing. But exercise a little restraint and think before you tweet!
