I started thinking about how Facebook is growing and changing. It reminded me of a time when all I wanted to do was ride my bike- sun up to sun down. Nothing else mattered as long as I had air in my tires. I would ride for miles and miles, no where to go.
That all changed when I got my learner’s permit and first car. Pushing down on the gas pedal, rolling through the 4 speed stick shift; protected by the windshield and no bugs in my teeth. It was faster than my bike and made me feel all grown up.
But after years of driving in traffic, getting the oil changed on a regular basis, and making the car payment I harken back to those days when getting from point A to B didn’t cost a thing. And there was something authentic about riding through town without a windshield separating me from the clear blue sky. And much like my bike, I miss the old Facebook which brings me to my point.
All Grown Up
Facebook’s need to generate revenue is now it’s guiding force. Ad Age recently announced magazines will start selling subscriptions within your news feed. As they appear in your feed, you can share them, you can comment on them. But this new functionality is great for Publishers but what about me? I really enjoyed connecting with my old friends and having simple conversations about life. Now I have to contend with managing “stuff” that I really don’t want.
Facebook hop on your bike. Take a long ride through town. Reminisce about how all you wanted to do was to create a way for students to connect with one another. And I think you’ll come to the same conclusion as I, basic is good, especially when it was great to begin with.
