may_31_calendarRecently you may have heard of a group that was hoping to start a mass exodus of Facebook. Well folks that day has come and gone- the results are in…Facebook 1, other sites 0. Did anyone think that this would really take the steam out of the Social Media powerhouse we all know and love to hate?

Why the Failure?

Facebook is the highest, trafficked web site in the world. I’m sure you have fond memories of reconnecting with old friends because of the platform’s existence. I know I do. However, it’s not all honey with FB. That sting on your tongue comes from the ever present privacy concerns but those are on their way to being fixed.

But imagine dumping all of your friends, closing your FB account, and then starting all over again on another platform. It’s just too much. You’ve got everyone from Boomers to Gen-Yers on FB and although some are early adopters of new tech they are highly unlikely to risk losing their existing connections. Remember, there are real friends on FB and FB-only “friends”. Your parents would call these other people “acquaintances.” Be that as it may, the number of friends is equal to most folks Internet value. But let’s not go there today.

A new platform would take time to build up the momentum that FB currently is riding. Diaspora, is cool and we should all keep our eyes on it but there is no way it is going to replace the monolithic giant any time soon. So, enjoy your acquaintances while you have them and embrace FB for what it is. But always remember to only post what you don’t mind the world hearing/seeing.
